you are what you love

It seems this break I've been at war with sickness and, sadly, the sickness has WON. Seeing as I could barely leave my bed, let alone even think about heading to the mall and fighting the Christmas herds of people I've done a lot of my shopping online.

Check out some of my favorite posters from Methane Studios.

They make original silkscreen and letter press prints & posters. A rare find for a great price. The poster I ordered happened to be sold out on the site, but I easily found it on e-bay for around $40.00.

Alright there is a sugar cookie coated with cream cheese icing with my name on it in the kitchen.

Happy Holidays! :)

This was my first assignment for my Studio 1 class. I did it above my fireplace here in my room. It is still there right now, i am really enjoying looking at all of the things I have collected over the years displayed in here. So there it will stay until the masking tape falls.

Sunday I was thumbing through this issue of HOW magazine  from 1998 that my aunt had given me forever ago. There were these amazing collages that David Carson did for the movie "Addicted to Love."  I can't seem to find an image of it anywhere on the web but it is all of these old pages from books, clippings from magazines, and handwritten notes combined on this weathered piece of wood. His work was like a breath of fresh air for me. Lately i've been feeling so locked down to a computer and seeing his work has really reminded me that to be a graphic designer you don't have to stare at a computer screen all day. I have always found inspiration everywhere but to execute my ideas i've always had to sit down in illustrator or photoshop or indesign... which isn't something i completely hate... but a change is nice. A breath of fresh air is nice.

(oh also, if you look at Carson's site be careful not to skip over the CNN quote about Sarah Palin he has before you click to enter)

Yeah, yeah, yeah

It's true. I'm still searching for a bedspread for my oh so bland room in Savannah. I don't want to be confused for an interior designer or anything but dannnng i can't help but find myself looking at fabric patterns (they are phenomenal!)

All of the quilts on Hazel and Melvin's Room are designed by Rebbeca Yaker. She has designed for more than eight years for America's largest retailers. Then in '05 she decided to leave the corporate world and start an independent company focusing on updating products for babies. She has taken inspiration from the colors and patterns of the 1950s and made some precious things. It's just so sad they don't come in MY size!

The fabric designer is Amy Butler
she has a very great story of how she came to be where she is now---> here . You should read it because I don't think I could write it better than she does on her site. She has a good thing going! The fabric is lovely, and her husband coordinates the site, photography, and packaging. Which all are very nicely put together and impressive.

These ladies are two more that I can put on the list of people that I aspire to be like one day. They are truly following their dreams, and living their lives inspired and successful. How much better does it get?

It must be said

Thank you so much to SanLori! Lorraine wrote a very sweet post about me on Friday, and was even so kind to link my 'lil blog to their blog. I am so flattered! Also thanks to all of you at SanLori for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime this summer as an Intern. This week is my last week and I'm really sad to leave. Working at SanLori has gotten me thinking about the future and their blog has inspired me to start my own! There are so many great things going on there and I was honored to be a small part of their wonderful company this summer.

books, books, and more books please.

Last Sunday I found these books in my house. Hidden away for years basically waiting for me to find them. I've always loved antiques, vintage clothing, my grandmother's quilts, and the way old books smell. Maybe it reminds me of my childhood because my mother drug me through countless antique stores around Arkansas. Anyway, she had these very very old books shoved away on the top shelf of her book case in the office. Some of them belonged to my Great Uncle Harold-who is now around 90. The most interesting things I find in these antique books are hand written notes or things that have been underlined. I always take it as that I was supposed to find it and read it and be touched or something hokey like that. In one of the history books, I found this clipping from a Kansas newspaper, it had few comics and an article about Shakespeare. To me, that is like finding a time capsule. It's really the only realistic time capsule if you think about it. I mean, honestly, who is going to dig up that crap in 20 years? Who is even going to remember it is there? I think you are better to put something into an old book and give it to a used book store, and maybe someone like me will find it one day and be touched.

So a few days later I was looking for artwork to put up in my apartment and came across this website called Little Paper Planes. It's one of these sites that is full of interesting and unique things. It started out small with just one artist selling things. Then it grew to her selling her friends artwork and so on, and now I have noticed it from a million miles away. So after finding all of those old amazing smelling books on Sunday I was drawn to these two prints by BirdsandSwings . I love the feeling that you get from a rough edge of an old book page, and it would serve as a perfect canvas because it already has so much texture from the words in the background. And then with the gold silkscreen print of the flower over it, and the little blackbirds I was sold! Not to mention the fact that they give a description about what is written on the page and a wiki link to an explanation of the book. Wow, I think we were meant to be friends or something.

quilt anyone?

So, today has been my day to search for a new bedspread, and it turns out i have as much of a problem staying focused on one thing on the Internet as I do in a conversation. I am known to rudely interrupt a story and not even notice. My friends learn to laugh at me, while others probably think I think they are boring. I seriously have a mild case of ADD but that is another issue. Anyway, it all combines to make me an extremely random person. Soooo, trying to stay on topic, I started out looking for an interesting quilt and somehow ended up on a website with books, and found this fabulous book on Florence Broadhurst. An amazing woman who I had completely forgotten about until her bold book cover caught my eye. (it was red with white flowers so of course i loved it) One boring night in my apartment last year, I watched this documentary OnDemand (which i am addicted to) about her, and what an interesting woman she was. A seriously talented pattern creator, business woman, and if my memory is correct she was well known for her amazing wallpaper and fabrics. Despite my mild case of ADD--I have figured out what I want exactly: that book (along with about 4803248 others from that site) and a bedspread with a Florence Broadhurst pattern on it.

Pourquoi?

suppose if you're reading this you may be slightly interested in why I am here. I want a place to gather and share my thoughts. Lately I've been so inspired and had considered starting a journal, but it seems like the majority of things that pertained to my work were on the internet. So I guess I am just coping with the fact that the internet and computers are somewhat taking over my life right now (and probably for a while, ha!)  I've opted to try out a blog. I think this little blog could be the start of something quite nice.
